Kiwi Homes

Installment #2. Places we stayed at.

Places to stay at in New Zealand are cheap, clean, fun, and nice. Since all of New Zealand basically shuts down every night at about 5pm and doesn't start again until about 9am, it is imperative that the tourist lodgings are these things. You end up spending a lot of time in these quarters.

So we basically ran the gambit of places to stay at, from hostels (many of them), to beach homes, to A FREAKIN' LIGHTHOUSE. More about THE FREAKIN' LIGHTHOUSE later. This was one of the highlights of the trip and proper attention must be given to it.

1) Auckland Backpackers Central. Picture everything you like in cool European hostels, minus loud obnoxious people throwing up in your room, dirtiness, and rude staff--you've got ABC. The coolest hostel ever. Staff was so nice, and it was really, really well equipped. Throw in it being just $22/night + free pizza for dinner + free drinks and you've got yourself a hell of a deal:

2) Moving right along to Reglan...the cutest little beach bungalow hostel in the cutest little beach city. You can't really call it a hostel, more like a cottage/B&B with free kayaking and biking. Our room was so tight, it was all sunny and clean with a garden outside. We had a kayaking "experience" (we almost died), but I think that will go on the adventures blog.

3) The Criterion Hotel. Not particularly memorable, except that the whole town is designed in the art deco style, having been quickly reconstructed after an earthquake in the early 1930's. It's historically important I guess. The Hotel itself is a prime example of art deco. I also got my haircut in this town.

4) There were other places...but I have to save at least two picture spaces for THE FREAKIN' LIGHTHOUSE! We rented a LIGHTHOUSE! The whole LIGHTHOUSE for only $118/night. OMG, I woke up with a 360 degree view of the ocean, light, rocks, waves...and the tip of the South Island. You can see the South Island from where we were. It was AMAZING! Came with a little kitchen and everything. I think I could have stayed there forever...the whole thing was like a dream come true. Seriously didn't want to leave. My goodness, no matter what view it was perfect. Rain--perfect. Wind--perfect. Sunny--perfect. Oh, and the owner also had the kitchen stocked with all this breakfast stuff...it was so wonderful!

This is how I woke up. Pretty snazzy no?

I wish I could put pictures of our Tahiti bungalow in this space, but alas, blogger only allows 5 pictures per blog. Tahiti will have to wait. Till next time.
